Williamston Road near Exit Number 117

For many years the stretch of Williamston Road between I-96 and the city limits has been a notorious speed trap. The speed drops to 25 mph almost immediately when you exit the expressway and the city police officers are right there to pounce. Driving over 25 mph in either direction (North or South) will guarantee you a ticket!

Heading north on Williamston road just north of I-96 (exit 114). Speed limit drops from 55 to 45 to 35 to 25 in the span of 1/2 mile, and you are still in the country.

Two spots to be particularly careful.

– "Welcome to Williamston" sign on the east side of the road is exactly were the speed drops from 45 to 35. Officers will sit behind the sign, behind a large bush, and clock traffic (I kid you not, a scene right out of the movies).

– Speeds drops from 35 to 25 (again, still in the country), and you start down a step hill. Officers will sit on either the east side of the road, where the industrial park driveway is, or directly across the road in the church parking lot.

I almost always see a cop in one of the medians around there. Sometimes, I’ve seen 3 or 4 departments there. A cop stands on top of the bridge, and fires his radar gun there at several cars and 4 police crusiers will pull over the speeders one after another.

City police are in revenue enhancement mode, due to problem economy in local government (which is broke). Police car is typically on the west side of road, in a small white church’s parking lot. This is just before speed limit sign for 45 mph from a 25 mph zone (so they can write ticket for 20+ over the limit). Cars come down a hill southbound out of town, or down a hill northbound entering the town, so it is a natural location to pick off drivers. Radar is set low. I was stopped for 2 mph over the 25 mph limit.

25 MPH speed limit in rural area. Police like to park at the bottom of a hill with pulse guns. If you don’t ride your breaks, there is no way you can go 25.
