Between city limits signs on Highway 79 (30 mph zone)

Foley, MissouriJun 08, 20114 Comments

Foley, Missouri is definitely a speed trap. It is very small with one speed zone about a mile in length (30 miles per hour). Tickets are an important revenue resource for the town. There is one four way stop (make a complete stop there). From that stop to the end of the 30 mph zone is about two-thirds of a mile, where it changes to 60 mph (Don’t count on 30 mph in this zone as being safe, 20 is best). Set my cruise control at 30 mph from stop signs and didn’t accelerate until after the 60 mph sign. Forty-to-Fifty yards past the first 60 mph sign, I saw flashing lights and was pulled over past a second 60 mph sign (going 50 mph there). Disputed officer’s statement and asked to see radar reading, he refused, was very upset.

A police officer is often in front of the local store or tucked just off of the highway on one of the two streets that intersect the highway. He has no tolerance for anything over the posted speed.

The town of Foley has town boundies that incompass the town, but on the southern edge they extend down highway 79 to emcompass an area equal to about 20% of the entire length of the town. There are no buildings or population in the area and the state speed limit sign is at the extreme southern end, Do not increase your speed until you are beyond this sign. One can look at MapQuest to see what I mean. The officer pulled out of an area on the west side of the highway beyond the last street in town and I was pulled over before I ever got to the 60 MPH sign.

While traveling on rural Hiway 79 at the posted 60 mph speed limit you will encounter a small sign saying "reduced speed ahead". Removing your foot from the gas pedal to slow your speed and in a secons or two a sign stating the speed limit is thirty (30) mph. Just past this sign is where the town of 178 people has a video radar car posted. The abrupt change from 60 down to 30 is impossible, even if you know of this ridiculous speed limit, less alone encountering it for the first time. I am in my 62nd year of driving and this is my first speeding ticket.
