Coming down the hill in Van Buren when the speed limit changes from 65 to 45. The officer sits at the bottom of the hill to "tag" you as you coast. I hit my breaks to disengaged my cruise control and he got me going 60 in the 45. It cost me $295 for my lawer, ticket and court fees.

First of all, the 45-MPH speed limit on US60 in Van Buren is a little bit ridiculous, as I think 50 or 55 at that point would be safe (US60 west of Van Buren is 60 MPH and 65 MPH east of Van Buren, BTW), but it’s pretty strictly enforced.

However, that’s not the main thing to watch out for. Van Buren’s police department is comprised of nothing but a bunch of good ol’ boys who will pretty much do whatever they want to to anyone they want to (well, at least one of ’em is like this, as I shall explain), and the Carter County court is in cahoots with ’em the whole way.

Case in point: A good friend of my fiance was passing through Van Buren not too long ago when one of Van Buren’s finest got right on her bumper trying to make her slip up so that they could write her up. She held in there firm and was obeying the speed limit and such. Well he then sped around her and passed her and then slowed down enough to where she had no choice but to either pass him or tailgate him, so she slowed down, and then he pulled over into the passing lane, let her around, and then pulled her over and fined her $82 for following too closely.

This was clearly a bogus charge and nothing but uncalled-for harassment. She took him to court, and guess whose side the court was on, never mind the fact that the officer was resorting to such underhanded tactics such as this to make some $$$ for the Van Buren Police Department.
Cops like him are an outright DISGRACE to law enforcement officials everywhere.
