Be very careful when returning from an evening in Asbury Park. The police will follow you on Main Street through Bradley Beach, Avon and into Belmar. If you are found guilty of exceeding the speed limit, then you’ll get tickets from all of those towns.

Bradley Beach is a very small town (0.6 sq. mi. according to Wikipedia) on the Jersey shore. It is between Ocean Grove and Avon. The small police force has been instructed to generate revenue and harassment of drivers is the main activity of the small police department. Keep in mind that speed limits change VERY frequently per different towns and even different roads in the same town. In BB, the speed limit on Main St. is 30. In Ocean Grove (next door), it is 25. On Memorial Drive (the other side of the railroad tracks parallel to Main St.) it is 40. Cops in cars "hide" on side streets or in parking lots and appear out of nowhere. They have no interest in hearing what the driver has to say and some are extremely hostile and contemptuous. The rules of this site prohibit my mentioning names of officers so I will not. Suffice to say that whatever explanation you give an officer is useless. You WILL get a ticket for going 5 mph over the limit or for going through a yellow traffic light. They will try to hit you with other offenses (alcohol, drug-related) and are none too happy when your performance proves them wrong. It doesn’t really matter is you are from out-of-town or local; everyone is fair game. (This is particularly self-destructive in a town whose major income is from seasonal (summer) tourists. Oh, well, they make choices. Just keep your eyes peeled for abrupt changes in speed limit signs; you may even realize that in the span of five minutes, you have cross four or five different towns, each with its own regulations.
