Santa Rosa, New Mexico Speed Traps
Right off of the highway
Cops waiting after highway in front of 35 mph sign, were ready to issue “court or pay fine” immediately.
US Highway 66/54 near Interstate 40 exit
Speed limit changes from 45 to 35 near bottom of long hill. Officer got me for 8 mile over and gave me choice of pleading guilty and mailing in my fine or staying to go to court. It was a Friday night and I had out of state plates.
Interstate 40 near Mile Marker 272
Patrol unit in median at different points between mile markers 272 & 275. Three different agencies man these spots at different times. They are state police, santa rosa city police and guadalupe county sheriff.

Interstate 40 near Exit Number 277
Officer enters on ramp. Officer misrepresents the options a person has in dealing with a ticket. Officer states that there are two choices – plead guilty or appear in person. The latter is not true – an attorney can appear on your behalf to reschedule the hearing until you can appear in person. So, not only is this a speed trap, it is extortion.
Interstate 40 both directions
State Police helicopter coordinating with ground units in middle of the day. I travel this route frequently, but only saw this one time, in Dec. 01. Luckily the helicopter tipped me off however, and I subsequently saw 3 police stops within 20 miles of this generally lightly patrolled part of the state.
