Vaughn, New Mexico Speed Traps
Center of town
Awesome and spooky setup – 2 cop cars – one on either side of this tiny town – lurking all day on their long purpose-built concrete launch ramps to zoom down and get you for 26 in a 25 – or WHATEVER!!! Lucky for me in 1999, I am such an old-fogey driver, there was no way to fabricate a speeding ticket for me, but the setup was so OBVIOUS from the physical setup!!!
In 1999, they had an ominous enforcement-warning sign in town, but the speed-limit signs came first, so it was like the old "Alice-in-Wonderland" thing where the verdict came FIRST! – before the witnesses.
285 South Top of hill just inside of town
Not just for out of state tags. Got hit there – Cop was sitting in an abandoned building lot at the top of the hill on the left so he could get a clear shot where the speed limit drops further north on 285. Once you’re in town he’ll chase you down and let you know you were doing 70 in a 45 zone. I guess as soon as you see the 45 MPH you should jam on the brakes.
State Highway 285
For a ghost town of less than 500, Vaughn offers a lot of enforcement. Two cops pulled us over and the cop subtracted 5 mph on the ticket from the supposed stated speed limit on the limit that he verbally said I was braking. I would never travel 285 again with a car that has out of state plates.
