Guilderland, New York Speed Traps

Guilderland, Albany Sheriff, and Altamont police officers are monitoring the traffic coming and going to the industial park in the winter sleigh riding park and community gardens.

I-90 eastbound, having just left the toll plaza at Thruway Interchange 24. Thruway speed limit in the area is 65 MPH, but on "free" I-90 in Albany, is 55 MPH. Unlike other spots where red warnings of "Reduced Speed Ahead" are present, there is only a single 55 sign on I-90. Traffic often quickly accelerates, having had to pass through the toll plaza, often missing the 55 sign. Police take advantage of motorists that are trying to make up the time lost for the toll stop, and/or having been acclimated to a previous 65 limit.

Just East of the I-90 overpass, between Hwy 146 (Carman Rd) and Hwy 155 (Karner Rd.) there is a small feeder road that angles onto East Old State Rd. This is about a qtr mile after the overpass. Eastbound cars tend to begin accelerating after the overpass because the road straightens and widens at this point, there are glaring no road hazards adjacent to the road and only a handful of residences are within 200 feet of the roadway. However a small 200 foot long cul de sac angles into E. Old State Rd. from the right, and this is where the Guilderland Police monitor cars’ speed. Westbound cars are also subject to radar check as they crest a hill about a half mile west of this point. Probably about 10 – 20 tickets a day are generated at this spot when it is patrolled. A real cash machine for Guilderland! Maybe they will be able to lower the town’s exhorbitant tax rate someday.

When comming down Old State Rd East from Route 146 towards Rt 155. You pass over I 90 once you cross the bridge and come around the corner there is a side road where local cops as well as state cops sit. You will pass them with out ever seeing them. The speed limit is 30 while traffic flows at 40 with out being stopped but 41 and they will get you
