Raleigh Road near US Highway 54

Chapel Hill, North CarolinaNov 16, 20040 Comments

Only on the side of the road leaving UNC, headed downhill. The cop usually sits in the left turn lane or in the driveway directly across form it at the bottom of the hill. The speed limit signs are blocked by trees & vines. The speed limit is 35mph and you will exceed this just by coasting because the hill is so steep. This is also a popular place to train new officers and they will pull you for 1 or 2 mph over.

NC 86 going into town

Chapel Hill, North CarolinaJul 09, 20030 Comments

NC 86 takes right into the heart of Chapel Hill. But However for a few miles outside of the town limits, 86 is a 4 lane highway with a 35 mph speed limit. This road can handle 45+ easily. I see patrolmen here often. Be careful here, especially if there is a UNC basketball or Football game going on.

Airport Rd.

Chapel Hill, North CarolinaJun 10, 20021 Comments

Airport Rd. is a four lane road with a grassy median separating opposite traffic lanes. The speed limit here is 35 mph, astoundingly low considering the number of lanes of traffic. One unmarked silver crown victoria with dual K band radar sits in the median which is located soon after drivers accelerate after a nearby stop light. Anything more than 5 mph warrants a ticket.

Marked car on median positioned to either catch cars coming down the hill and under the 15/501 bridge, or cars getting on from Smith Level. 54 bypass also regularly patrolled by unmarked cars – usually east of the 15/501 exit.
