Duck, North Carolina Speed Traps
US Highway 12
Speed drops quickly from 45mph to 25mph. Police car is parked on the side of the road with all lights off.
Route 12 in the area of Spyglass Rd. (northern end of town)
Representative of Dare County Sheriff’s Department was hidden from sight near Spyglass Rd. He pulled over two vehicles and claimed both were traveling at 54 mph in a 35 mph zone. However, the citation was written only for "exceeding the posted speed limit". Similar to the description of the Corolla, NC speedtrap, letters from various law firms arrived within a week. The lawyers charge $275 to have the citation changed from "exceeding the posted speed limit" to "making an unsafe maneuver". The firm I spoke to handles 50 – 75 of these cases per week! The bottom line is that the initial charge of traveling 54 in a 35 zone was an absolute fabrication and the County will change the name of the infraction as long as they get their $115 fine.
State Highway 12 entering Duck
Speed limit drops from 45 MPH to 35 MPH then to 25 MPH entering Duck, NC from the Northbound bound. 25 MPH is far slower then necessary to maintain safe motoring. Police approach from behind. When given a summons, police explain than many pedestrians have been "hit" by cars – though this is very well be the case during the height of the tourist season, it’s unlikely off-season, which was the case for me and another motorist. No one’s around walking in the pedistrian/bike lane at night off season!
