Kings Mountain, North Carolina Speed Traps

The city has a new white mustang to replace the old camaros just west of the hwy 161 Bessemer City Exit. You can’t miss it because the same cop is usually sitting with car pointed almost the wrong way. I have only seen one but you should look out for other colors as well. The state highway patrol loves to use this little short bypass on the way to Shelby NC as well. I know because i went to school with the district Sargent.

They are also using the old 74 still on Shelby rd in Kings Mountain and are now driving marked Dodge Chargers near the old Food Lion, they also have one on the east side now. Since the economy has slowed and most major businesses have closed including their car dealerships this must be the only source of tax revenue.

NC Highway Patrol and Cleveland County Police absolutely love this area for out-of-state drivers. Roughly about 65% of all tickets for speeding are handed out to out-of-state drivers in this area. I am a former clerk of court in a neighboring county and noticed this in the court dockets for several years. I asked a friend’s husband (a current NCHP Officer) about this and was told that drivers from other states will just pay the ticket by mail without contesting it therefore saving the state money by not having to hold court. If you are not from North Carolina, then driver beware! You are a target. I have personally seen dockets for as little as 5mph over in this area! All of them from out-of-state drivers!

Heading east into town the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 to 35 very quickly, police sit just over the crest of the hill near Loves fish box either in the middle or in one of the paring lots, to wait for speeders.

Just past the Highway 216 exit going Westbound and downhill. Kings Mountain Police frequently sit in unmarked patrol cars and camaros on the right just across the bridge. A second speedtrap is just ahead past the very next exit (Oak Grove Road) in several spots. The first spot is on the on-ramp to 74 Westbound and is used somewhat regularly. The other two spots are just past there in the median under the bridge supports. These are used frequently by NC Highway Patrol to catch speeders in both directions. Usually at night, although they have been seen during midday hours as well.
