Oak Island, North Carolina Speed Traps
New access road to Swains Cut Bridge
speed drops from 55 to 45 as you near bridge, round the bend and they sit at the base of the bridge waiting . Drops from 45 to 35 when your atop bridge, they sit on island side, across road shooting radar up as you crest bridge. It is questionable that they cehck your speed when your actually in a 45 but charge you as ifyou were in a 35.Watch the access road, they like to sit on the median strip at night always nice to have your high beams on and sing the first rendition of "you light up my life" as you drive by……slowly
Swains Cut Bridge
The new bridge to Oak Island is now opened. For incoming traffic the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 right before the bridge As soon as you crest the bridge you will see the 35 mph sign. They watch it close with radar. Also incoming just as the speed changes from 55 to 45 there is a road on the left and they will be backed in there with radar. Don’t Speed!!
Reverse the procedure on the way home.
Oak Island’s New Bridge
When coming onto Oak Island by the New Bridge the speed limit falls from 55 mph to 45 mph and then to 35 as you cross over the bridge. There is no way to slow safely to the speed limit in the distance allowed. This is a speed trap!
Entire Town
Oak Island, wonderful vacation spot that it is, IS a speed trap. I’ve never been ticketed, but I see droves of tourists being ticketed. ANY infraction will get you a ticket… even a few miles over the limit, a seat belt, a stop sign, anything to relieve your wallet of some of those tourist dollars. Expect checkpoints at one end of the bridge(s) or another, too. The way this is handled, it isn’t about safety, it is about revenue. Be very careful….
