Old Salisbury Road right at Moose Lodge

Winston Salem, North CarolinaJan 30, 20030 Comments

As you come either direction N or S on Old Salisbury Road, there will be a Winston-Salem Police patrol car sitting in the parking lot of the Moose Lodge. He sits behind a large tree covered in kudzu. Its too hard to maintain 35 mph going down a hill and he sits at the bottom of the hill.

Healy Drive, near the bridge

cop hiding in bushes near the bridge overpass. Happened to me at noon on a random sunday. I actually think that he only comes out when it is rainy out (slick, curvy road). Good luck avoiding this guy!

US 52 N. at Hwy. 8 overpass

Winston Salem, North CarolinaJul 15, 20020 Comments

The approach to the bridge on north-bound US 52 is slightly downhill and the exit ramp is a loop on the other side. WS police cruisers love to sit just off the exit facing south. You cannot see them until you almost get to the bridge – too late to slow down. The speed limit is 55, but 65 is the average traffic flow, 70 is not uncommon and generally not unsafe.

Silas Creek Parkway

Winston Salem, North CarolinaJul 15, 20020 Comments

Everyone in Winston knows about the infamous Silas Creek trap yet they still make payroll on this road, primarily from the Reynolda Rd. area to Business I-40, both directions. This road is chuck full of motorcycle patrol officers looking not only for speeders but also for aggresive driving. The road has many side streets great for hiding motorcycles and they often work in groups of several officers in a 3 to 4 mile stretch. The speed limit is 45 but 55 to 60 is the average speed except during rush hour. Traveling 45 on this road feels like you’re crawling but beware of Ponch and John ("Chips").

Business I-40

Bussiness I-40 is a 16 mile highway starting in Winston Salem and it spits you back on I-40 Between Kernersville and Greensboro. Winston-Salem PD,Forsyth County SD, and NC highway patrol fish on this highway. Here are the list of places where I commonly see waiting cruisers pearched on the shoulder.

Mile marker 1:This is where I-40 and Bussiness 40 split. The speed limit is reduced from 65 to 55. They are also overpasses and underpasses where cops hide in. Be careful at night they like to sit with thier lights off and you may not see them until its too late.

Mile Marker 4:This is the part that runs through downtown. The speed limit is reduced from 55 to 45. There is a bridge with plenty of shoulder room on the side for cops to sit. They are more common at night and I see people fall into thier clutches often here. Be vigilant when driving through this section.

Mile Marker 6: There is a bridge that crosses US 52. Cops will sit here and are ready to pull down any unsuspecting motorists. Speed limit 45.

Mile markers 6-17: As you proceed out of the city limits of Winston-Salem, Bussiness 40 looks like a typical interstate highway, grass median and lots of trees on the side of the road. Perfect habitat for cops. The speed limit through here is 60 mph. Because traffic flow is relatively light in this section, you could do around 70-75. So be careful.
