The speed limit on Highway 66 is normally 65 mph, except for a short area before/after going through a town. Luther is something of an exception…the speed limit remains below 65 for 3 to 4 miles once you leave Luther…and you don’t even go through town, you just drive by the turnoff to town and one little gas station or something.

East of Luther Rd. the speed limit is 45 for two to three miles going toward Wellston. You assume it is 55 or 65 as it is a rural area.

Luther Police sit within this two mile section all times of the day or night, and they usually have at least two officers on duty. If you are the only vehicle on the Highway at the time they are out, they will immediately pull in behind you and run your vehicle tag, and find a reason to pull you over. I’ve been stopped there more than once, and I try to avoid going through there whenever possible. I’m a police officer, and completely disagree with their tactics for traffic stops.

The whole town is a trap. Luther, a town of less than 1000 boasts of 14 full time officers. They have court twice a month with about 100 people waiting hours to see the attorney and judge, but most paying the $200.
The same deal is met with everyone. Instead of paying $200, pay $150 + the $35 court cost and the violation will not go on your record.

I was told I was clocked doing 55 in a 45. No where did I see a speed posted for 45. I was pulled over in a 55 mile zone (for sure). I was told the ticket is not reported to the state. Undoubtedly to remain unnoticed. Not sure there is any way to avoid this situation except to not drive through.
