Interstate 85 South

Duncan Police Officers will set at the SCHEP Station (old rest area South bound I-85 South just past US-29) You can not see them, they use a laser and will have you stopped before you get to exit 63, SC 290 Duncan Exit. BEWARE YOU’VE BEEN WARNED

The Duncan Police force has 19 officers, I live and travel the roads in this area very often, I can vouch for this, the town is VERY small so honestly this is the only revenue they get is catching speeders (or anyone blowing their horn to avoid being hit). I am serious. An officer back in March 2011 pulled me over when a car swerving into me while the officer was pulled on the shoulder of I-85 south at the SC 290 bridge with another motorist, a car in the center lane was swerving into me and I was trying to watch the officer and other car in the process, I hit the horn on my car as I passed not to get hit. A few miles later at exit 60, the officer had chased me down roughly 4 miles to pull me over and asked me “Was that me that blew the horn and why?”. I never understood that. Just be careful in the vicinity between exits 60 (SC 101) and 66 (US 29) and in particular the vicinity of exit 63 (SC 290). As mentioned by another poster, they like to sit on the top of the hill either direction to catch speeders as they crest the hill. Also, beware northbound as they will have a officer sitting at the bottom of the hill where the on ramp from SC 290 approaches running radar with other officers that will pursue the speeder, I have seen as many as 3 at one time in a mile stretch north of exit 63. One final note, there are absolutely “NO” Duncan City Limit signs on I-85 to let you know you are actually going through the area, so just beware.

Duncan PD has jurisdiction not only over the area surrounding Highway 290 but also from Highway 29 to High way 101. The main area of the trap is around Highway 290, but they will turn around at 101 and 29 and then ping traffic on their way back to 290. They also have jurisdiction down to Highway 296 on 290 and into the Duncan city limits, obviously.

Have seen on serveral occasions recently that a local Duncan police cruiser or SC Highway trooper will park under the SC-290 bridge in the emergency lane I-85 northbound just after you pass exit 63. There is a hill to climb to the approach of exit 63 so you’re unable to see parked patrolman until you crest the hill and by then you’ve had it. So be aware!

Duncan Police Department is very small so they are always out on this road in full force, They will get you for 10mph over.
