US Highway 52

U.S. 52 northbound is a two lane highway. While traveling it at 0730 hrs on a Sunday morning I got a ticket for 52 mph in a 35 zone. The speed limit was 55 all along with a sign that you were approaching Society Hill SC. You make a slight bend to the right and bang!, there’s 35 mph sign along with an unmarked (no light bar) local. End result with no other cars on the road in either direction, a 200.00 speeding ticket.

This is a seven day per week trap that grosses a huge amount of money for the city government of Society Hill. I can’t recall ever passing through there when someone was not being ticketed.
Your speeding ticket will be reduced to careless operation of a motor vehicle if you pay an additional fee.
Just send in the money–no report to your state or your insurance.

I detected K band. I’ve seen as many as THREE unmarked cruisers in the vicinity, sometimes all with as many as two cars each pulled over. This is highly excessive, and proves that Society Hill is in the entrapment business. They do hide, and a radar detector isn’t necessarily effective, because they either hit you from behind, and the topography makes it a race for you to slow down before they lock on to you. I haven’t been hit, because it’s common knowledge – but I do give them a dirty glare as I go by. As a result, I ensure I never stop for gas, food, or drinks in Society Hill – ever. I go through there twice a week to head north, but I wait until I get to Cheraw for gas and such. I’ve been through there a total of 16 times, and I’ve seen cruisers there on 14 of the 16 occasions. One of the times I didn’t it was early Sunday AM, but as I went by the station, one was pulling out and heading that way.

Leaving the town and heading for open road on Route 52 going North. When you get out of town you think it is safe to resume normal highway driving speed. Not so in this town .The down town speed limit of 35 remains in effect and the police sit on the left hand side of road with a radar. My wife and I were driving separate vehicles and we both got tickets of $400.00 each. Also we were told if we wanted to pat an additional $80.00 each the ticket would not be turned in to our home state or our insurance company.

Highway 52 with posted 55mph limits changes immediately to 45mph and then immediately to 35mph in the minimum, if not less, than the state required distances. It is a downhill S-curve, with blind speed limit changes from 55mph to 45mph to 35mph in both north and south directions.
