49 Throughout Harrisburg

Harrisburg, North CarolinaApr 16, 20101 Comments

The speed limit goes from 45 to 55 to 35 to 45 to 50 to 55 when driving this 7 mile stretch through Harrisburg – no kidding!!! The police know this is confusing and has received SEVERAL complaints, however, they have done nothing to make the speed limit more consistent. I have not been ticketed since I live here and I’m VERY familiar with what the speed limit is by the block. But out of towners seem to not realize this. The police STALK this stretch of road EVERY DAY. There has not been one day that I can remember, when I didn’t see SOMEONE pulled over. Be careful!

Comments:
While traveling north on Hwy 49 in Mecklenburg County the speed limit is 45 around Interstate 485, but changes to 55 after Harris Houston Rd. Prior to leaving Mecklenburg County there is a sign warning that the speed limit is 35 ahead and upon entering Cabarrus County there is another warning sign stating "Begin 35 1000 feet". At the speed limit change there are two black and white speed limit signs outlined in orange; one on either side of the road. The speed limit is 35 mph through the major business district of Harrisburg. With 40,000 plus cars traveling this road a day the speed needs to be 35. As you leave the business portion of the town the speed limit increases to 50 mph and after you cross the Rocky River it changes to 55 mph. Prior to the speed limit change in Oct. 2009 there were 4 fatalities on this stretch of road. Since the speed limit change there have been no fatalities and the overall number of accidents have reduced!!
