56th Street near Post Road

Lawrence, IndianaJul 26, 20042 Comments

Those of you familiar with this area will recognize this is where old Fort Ben used to be. When there were platoons of troops running around, 35 was a reasonable speed. Well, since Fort Ben closed the speed limits have not been raised to reflect the change in road conditions. 56th street is a well maintained 4-lane divided street. There are not enough entrances to the street to justify this 35mph speed limit. Prevailing speeds are likely in the 50-55 range. 60 is not uncommon for those in the 90th or 95th percentile. The good news is it isn’t rigorously enforced. Watch the few side streets and businesses for police activity from Pendleton Pike to I-465.

Comments:
The speed limit on 56th Street is now 40mph and Lawrence radar cops will get you for going over the speed limit and usually sit on the north side of 56th Street on a side street just west of the Army Finance Center, passed the traffic light. Beware! Vehicles do usually speed on this section of 56th Street and it's easy pickings for the Lawrence radar officers. I don't consider this a speed trap since it's posted 40mph and most drive over that limit. However, there are plenty of 'speed traps' in Lawrence at other locations, believe me!

I've never seen so many radar traps. I've lived at 22 different addresses while serving in the Army but this place beats them all for traffic enforcement. After 20 years, the town is still reeling from the closing of the fort and need to subsidize county coffers with traffic ticket income. The number of tickets likely hasn't changed from when an Army Post was here.
