This certainly is a speed trap and it is not just in effect when the kids are going home from school (the vast majority get rides from parents). This trap is often in effect long, long after school is out, during rush-hour. This is not just manned by motorcycle cops. There are often cruisers there. There is a sort of frontage road just north of 58th and running parallel to it. It is interrupted by Simms St. It is true that Simms stops at that part of 58th (and picks up again fart to the south). It is a T intersection with the top of the T being south. The top of the T is also 58th Ave. If you were to draw a capital T and then draw a short line under and parallel to the top right section of the T but not touching the stem of the T, that could represent the frontage road where the police cruiser hides (and it is not at all noticeable until you are very close). Now the cruiser would be near the end of that new parallel line at the side near the stem of the T. It faces east and it has an outlet to 58th Ave. but not Simms. The officer has a good view of the entire intersection but because of the median, the officer is best situated to pursue traffic that is west-bound on 58th Ave. Even then he needs to to a U-turn but to his right. If you still have trouble visualizing this, consult a good street map of the area and you will see what I mean. Again, they often man this spot hours after school is out, during rush-hour. THEY DO NOT JUST ENFORCE THE SCHOOL-ZONE SPEED LIMIT, THEY ARE THERE MANY HOURS LATER REVENUING DURING RUSH-HOUR MANY HOURS AFTER SCHOOL IS OUT.

Correction: sorry, far to the south. That was completely by accident.

P.P.S. To be clear, the officers that I have seen on the piece of frontage road are probably concentrating on westbound traffic on 58th Ave. because of the logistics of the situation. That could include southbounders on Simms turning West or those going straight west, so be careful southbound Simms to westbound 58th, westbound 58th, and also when you are on the other section of the frontage road from the west of Simms and turning onto a very short piece of Simms in order to head west on 58th (it is a complicated and dangerous intersection to be sure). You see, you could also draw a line parallel to the left top of the T and this time actually touching the stem in order to portray that part of the intersection.
