Yes, this is a very abused speed trap. My wife got a ticket going southbound at the non-school hours speed limit after the kids were all in the school building proper. The ticket indicated the time of the so-called offense. My wife attempted to point out the fact that the children were gone from the schoolyard and all were long in the building. Did not make any difference. She immediately turned around and went to the school and got on the school letterhead the time school started and were in their classrooms which was signed by the Assistant Principal. The ticket was given six minutes after the school session had started! She went to court on this and offered as evidence the school statement as to starting time (8:30AM) and the time printed on the ticket (8:36PM). This was to no avail as far as the Judge was concerned and she was declared guilty. She protested and was told by the Judge that she could request a jury trial. A very nice lawyer at that point asked the Judge if he could talk to my wife. He told my wife that if she had a jury trial and was found guilty of speeding in a school zone that she would lose her drivers license for a couple years and that, right or wrong, take the Judge's ruling as the risk of the jury trial was to high and the costs involved would be high to defend her against the charge. She bit the bullet and took the Judge's guilty ruling and fine on the lawyers advice! We later learned that the chance of winning a not guilty plea despite having good evidence was slim to none in a jury trial do to the fact that you were fighting the State's Attorney, the Judge and the low quality (i.e. low intellegence) of the jury enpanneled plus the local police department. No justice present in the Bridgeview, Illinois court house.
