Airport Rd.

Chapel Hill, North CarolinaJun 10, 20021 Comments

Airport Rd. is a four lane road with a grassy median separating opposite traffic lanes. The speed limit here is 35 mph, astoundingly low considering the number of lanes of traffic. One unmarked silver crown victoria with dual K band radar sits in the median which is located soon after drivers accelerate after a nearby stop light. Anything more than 5 mph warrants a ticket.

Comments:
The speedlimit is indeed very strictly enforced on this road. From an automobile safety standpoint, there is no reason for the speed limit to be so low, but this road is also heavily used by pedestrians. It is lined with residential areas on either side of the road, many of whose residents use the free bus service to commute into town. The road has several mid-block crosswalks, and pedestrians are constantly crossing the street. The speedlimit needs to be where it is to minimize the injuries to pedestrians.
