Approx. 2 miles out of town going south

My husband was driving he is 64 years old nothing on his driving record. We were pulled over and told that he was driving 62 miles all through town. We live in an area where there are 45 mile an hour speeding signs everywhere, you would think that if he drove 17 miles over the speed limit he would have multiple speeding tickets on his record. I am very disappointed that when someone is in a position to help serve justice, they are unjust. I have read on here that it does no good to go to the town to fight the ticket, where is the justice. I guess I will have to choose rather to pay an attorney the money or the Damascus Police Dept. I have called the Mayor and was told he is in and out, but so far no return call. I have also read on this site that they give over 200 tickets a month out to people from out of town, this is because it is cheaper to pay it than to go back to the town, but like I said earlier if you go to court without an attorney you still pay the ticket. I am ready to call whoever I have too, to make this stop happening.

On 11/16/2014, right about sundown, my wife and I were returning home from Branson, MO. i am a 70 year old, retiree, partially deaf USAF veteran and have seldom been ticketed in my 56 year driving history, and I do not feel I am that much of a threat to society. We were south bound on U.S. 65 near the town's entrance, stopped and ticketed for 63 mph in a 45 mph zone, although neither my wife or I saw the posted speed reducing sign. The "arresting" officer was very matter-of-fact, no questions.no conversation, very impersonal, just started writing the citation after flashing the cop blue lights for several minutes before approaching the car on the passenger side. The cop was a slightly overweight "lady" young as my grand daughters, galling me further, she had one quite visible body piercing in her left nostril. Don't stop to eat or to do any business in Damascus, AR, they do not need the tax proceeds, they get enough revenue from their "speed trap". .

Damascus is definitely a speed trap! My step-son was stopped there on Dec 14. Then, on Dec 15, my daughter was stopped. Oddly, citations are usually written for 62-69 mph in a 45 mph zone. There is one speed limit sign marking a 45 mph limit. Two brand new SUV police vehicles wait with radar to catch "speeders" as they pass through the 45 mph zone. We saw three vehicles pulled over within moments of each other.

12/19/2014 Wow, my daughter also got a ticket in Damascus tonight on her way home to Tennessee from Branson for Christmas!! :( Speed trap for sure!!!!! She had her cruise set and when she seen the 45 mph, hit her brakes to slow down and "BAM" blue lights. I also will be seeing who we can talk to outside of this little city to get some people some relief on this speed trap. By all mean buckle up and obey the law...... but shouldn't there be laws for this speed trap as well?

The first story is so much like my own. The family often chides me for poking along. It was dark when we went through Damascus. There were no reflectors to identify the lanes and the painted lines were faded. I gave my attention to staying in the proper lane. Some said, "There's a cop!" Well, that didn't bother me, but I checked my speed -- about sixty. I thought the speed limit was 65 or close to it. In my mind I wasn't speeding. So I didn't alter my speed. The blue lights startled me. The young man approached the passenger side door. Typical requests. License, proof of insurance, and registration. The car had been cleaned out for our trip, so I couldn't find the registration. So..... ticket for doing 63 in a 45 and also for no proof of registration. The other comments are correct. The speed limit drops suddenly. There is nothing about the environment to make one feel that this is an unsafe place and one should suddenly slow down. I guess there is no such thing there as a warning ticket. No need to argue. And most likely the court is in cahoots with the police. They want and need the money. It certainly will leave a bad taste with tourists from out of state. Someone should be there on a busy night and video tape all the stops. Just don't get arrested doing it. Damascus is not alone in this. There are several places along Hwy 65 where the speed limit drops and you can get caught. Spread the word to your friends who take this major route from Conway to Branson. Boycott businesses in those places.

Why should anyone get a warning ticket for doing 18mph over the speed limit. State police don't give warnings for doing 18 over. And all the driveways and slower traffic should alert you that you need to slow down. Every town or city is going to have it's MAIN street at a lower speed. And the town's do not set the speed on a highway. The state Highway Department does numerous studies and controll the speed on highways.
