Branch Ave. SE at U St. SE, Washington DC 20020

Washington, District of ColumbiaOct 04, 20112 Comments

This unmanned trap has recently (Oct. ’11) been added to the north side of a utility module that is on the ground on the NE corner of Branch Ave. SE and U St. SE. It cannot be seen on approach by the north-bound traffic on Branch Ave., who are its targets. North-bound Branch Ave. between Alabama and Pennsylvania Avenues is a half-mile long downhill stretch, making it very easy to exceed the posted limit of 25 mph. The trap is at roughly the half-way point between these two avenues. Beware!

Comments:
This trap has actually been removed, as of at least 12/17/11. Not only is the trap equipment (camera, strobe light, etc.) gone, so is the "utility module" the equipment was attached to. The whole thing, in other words, may have been a semi-portable trap. Will let you know if it returns. For now at least all of Branch Ave. SE between Alabama and Pennsylvania Ave's is back to being trap-free.

As of 2/1/12 at least this trap has returned. It's now mounted on a larger silver-colored "utility module" that's placed about a yard closer to U Street than the previous dark-colored box. The camera equipment is still attached to the box with black straps so the whole thing is somewhat easier to spot now. The strobe light and camera however are still on the north side of the box, hidden from approaching north-bound traffic. Like before it snaps pictures from behind as cars pass. I haven't actually seen this one light up so I can't be sure it's not just a decoy. I'll post again later if I see that. By the way, the whole thing is at ground level; it's a little surprising that an angry motorist hasn't paid it a visit with a hammer or some black paint.
