Comments:
I ran into a speed trap on Route 74 in Rutherford County, just before entering Polk County. The police were out in full force working both sides of 74 in unmarked cars, in tandem, with the support of state police. It was a Sunday morning and the first day of the month. I am a Virginia driver who made the mistake of passing two unmarked cars that had pulled over another driver. I did not know that it is the law to move to the left lane, so after I passed the cars (no one was standing outside of the vehicles) I was pulled over by the second unmarked car that was lying in wait for someone just like me to either speed past him and/or pass without switching lanes. The ticket identified a fine of $250 and court costs of $141.00! I asked the officer if he would let me off with a warning, since I was an out of state driver that was not aware of this North Carolina law. He didn't even consider it. Their goal is to collect as much money as they can for the County. I was in that part of the state on vacation, an out of state visitor putting money into the North Carolina economy. $391.00 could probably get you two nights in the Grove Park Inn & Resort (Asheville). I will never go through Rutherford County again.
