Colfax Ave. (Business I-70), east of I-225

Aurora, ColoradoAug 18, 20101 Comments

On a clear, wide stretch of Colfax Ave., with good visibility, roomy shoulders and few turnoff locations, the speed limit is posted at 35MPH. If this doesn’t seem too low, compare it to cross streets posted at 40MPH or above. Also, compare it to a narrower, much more congested stretch of Colfax farther east, which is also posted at 40MPH. Go figure.

Not surprisingly, the city seems to have plenty of its radar-equipped motor officers patrolling this 35MPH zone, and they appear to do quite a bit of business.

For anyone driving east or west through metropolitan Denver, the I-70 business loop (including this stretch) is awfully long anyway, and I’d suggest that the best way to see Aurora is from the Interstate itself, where the easier challenge is to stay in line with the speed limits up there, which vary between 55 and 75. At least you can put your cruise control to good work!

Wow! I posted this one and now I see plenty of votes against it being a speed trap. Compared to other stretches of major streets in Aurora, exactly what justifies the lower (35) speed limit on this part of Business 70? I'd enjoy to see your case in favor of this set-up.
