Driving east on 64, intersection of 64 & 321

Olar, South CarolinaOct 09, 20146 Comments

Driving east on 64 by taking back roads from Augusta area toward Charleston. This route takes you through several small towns where the speed limit drops precipitously over a short distance. Oler is no different. As with all other previous towns, I obeyed the speed limit changes as quickly as possible. As I approached 321 and the railroad tracks a few feet in front of it, I saw an unmarked black car. My speed at this time was under 20 MPH. After proceeding past the stop sign, I noiced this black car had blue lights flashing and was pulling me over. I asked my wife why I was being pulled over and we agreed that we weren’t sure.

The officer claimed he clocked me at 50 in a 35, which to me is impossible as I was driving cautiously and slowed down as quickly as possible within reason immediately after being able to visually see the posted speed limit every time it changed (55 to 45 to 30 or 35 as I may recall). After receiving my ticket, he had it marked as 50 MPH in a 30.

I was driving through from out of state. There’s no way I can fight this as I’m long gone now. Even if I could contest it, it’s my word against his. Absolute garbage and completely unfair. Looks like I’m not alone here.

Olar is a speed trap. i video taped signs going from 45 mph to 55 mph to 65 mph and back to 30 mph in the span of a few hundred feet. The officer looks like all he did was sit and eat in that car and stop people. how dare you trap out of state travelers and then call your town a city? Really? I was stopped going 47 in a 45 mph zone, but he said it was 30, and i clearly saw 45 and 55mph.. matter of a fact i was stopped just beyond the 55mph i looked at my odometer in disbelief because i was going 45!! and received a $180 ticket and a court date for less than a month. I was so hurt because i did everything in my power to drive the speed limit and never saw a 30 mph sign at all. it is a trap and they should be punished. i too will be contacting the State attorney.

So if you video taped a 30mph sign, it obviously exists. What does that tell you? Pay attention and you will see the signs! And please...I'd love to know where in Olar there is a 65mph sign! But yes...punishment should indeed fall on the police officer! If I roll my eyes any harder maybe I can see things as backward as some of you!

Why do you always feel the need to write that you are not the officer in your comments? Nobody cares! All they care about is how Olar, South Carolina has elected to fund its city by becoming a speed trap.

Olar is one of those little towns that depend on speeding tickets to survive and pay the police. I regularly drive through Olar and know where to slow down. I've found the one lone cop running radar at 5am in the morning. Any town should have the right to enforce their laws. However Olar seems to punish even those not breaking the law. I have been behind traffic that was not speeding only to have the car pulled over.
