Duane Street near Silver Lake Boulevard

Silver Lake, CaliforniaJan 08, 20082 Comments

Not a speed trap, put a new installed no left turn sign daily during am and pm rush hour. A cop tickets numerous people mon-fri.

Nearly two years after this was posted, it remains true, at least in the evenings. Motorcycle cops sit on Silverlake Blvd. and watch that intersection. I take Silverlake every day, and rarely a week goes by that I don't see some poor schlub getting a ticket there. Occasionally I've seen them get two or three cars at once. And for what? Doing something dangerous? Driving too fast? Nope, for making a left-hand turn that would be perfectly legal anywhere except Silverlake. And safer, too, since it's a T intersection and there's no oncoming traffic.

Four years after original post, two years after comment above: I drive by this intersection in the morning at least three times a week (mon-fri), and there is a motorcycle cop posted there every single day, without fail. I see drivers getting tickets every week; often they are 3 or 4 cars lined up with glum faced drivers waiting patiently to get written up (and it's probably expensive..given that a parking ticket for street cleaning days is now $68). The commenter above is correct: drivers turning left at this spot are not causing a safety hazard; there's no oncoming traffic. The only problem with a left hand turn at rush hour is that it would probably increase gridlock and impede the flow of traffic somewhat (the no left turn rule makes zero sense in pm rush hour, since the traffic is then going in the opposite direction, meaning right turns could conceivably make it worse); in truth, the rule doesn't make much sense (other than its obvious profitability to the city).
