Entire City has very low speed limit through entire village.

Sky Valley, GeorgiaJul 05, 20111 Comments

Sky Valley may be a small department, but they work their roads well – especially during the peak seasons (Spring/Fall)… I don’t know if they use speed detection devices, but given the low speed limit through the whole area, I know they can and will pace vehicles to see if they are going too fast for conditions or speeding. Just be careful in this little village retreat, and don’t get caught breaking the law – or you may end up in Sky Valley Municipal Court. Obey the law and you should be fine.

Comments:
Sky Valley has become a speed trap since the town gave radar to the police. This apparently happened in June 2016. It appears they are probably violating Georgia laws concerning the use of radar in several ways. The only highway going to Sky Valley is 246. It runs across the NC (It is consider Hwy 106 in NC) & GA lines several times near Sky Valley. When you are going up to Sky Valley from Dillard & enter the Sky Valley city limits (And the state of Georgia) on Hwy 246, after leaving NC, the speed limit is not posted. The police will pull you over & say you were speeding. They will tell you the speed limit is 25 mph, but who knows since the speed limit is not posted. There is no sign posted indicating that speed detection devices are in use. The portion of Hwy 246 which runs through the Sky Valley city limits has a 10 percent grade (There is a sign posted where you enter Sky Valley from the Scaly Mountain, NC side stating that the road has a 10 percent grade for the next 2 miles). Sometimes the police hide their car behind the trees at the edge of a scenic overlook on the side of the road & shoot their radar at cars. Other times they use radar at other spots. I found a article in the Oct 18, 2014 Atlanta Journal Constitution which states that is illegal for city police to use radar on roads with a grade exceeding 7 percent. The article also stated that the speed limit must be posted when you enter a city, and signs indicating that there are speed detection devices in use must be posted. The police are supposed to be visible for 500 feet when they use radar.
