Florida Avenue near 10th Street
There is a public school on North Florida Avenue just north of 10th Street that utilizes flashing amber lights to indicate when the posted speed limit is lowered from 30 MPH to 15 MPH for the three weekday times when students are on the street (arriving in the morning, at lunchtime, and leaving for the day). According to the school administration office personnel I spoke to recently, the amber warning lights for this particular school have not functioned at noon for approximately a month (since about 03-20-08) for some reason and the Alamogordo City Police utilize this to write tickets for driving 30+ MPH in a 15 MPH School Zone. The police have not made any attempt to report to city street maintenance this malfunction that jeopardizes the school childrens lives, instead preferring to risk young lives to generate revenue. If you drive on Florida in front of this school near 10th Street between about 11 AM and 1 PM you are in danger of hitting a child as well as getting ticketed for 15+ MPH over the speed limit! Please drive carefully there, the childrens lives are at risk!
