FM 3005 near Buckanear Boulevard

Galveston, TexasJul 06, 20062 Comments

This is Jamica Beach and the speed limit goes from 55 to 35 in a matter of seconds. They sit in their cars and watch for those who do not slow down. The 35 speed limit last for only a few minutes, then goes back to 55.

Comments:
This is a speed trap to be sure, but it's not like presented by the poster. The speed limit on 3005 from 1/2 mile before the pirates beach light is 50, not 55. Also the speed limit slows to 45 at least a half mile before you enter the city limit, way back in the middle of the state park. I remember there are three 45 MPH signs as well as the slow zone sign before you reach the 35 MPH zone. Jamaica Beach has a strong police presence and they always have a patrol car on 3005. It's always on the shoulder of 3005 right in front of the city building that houses the firetrucks, police and everything else government there. Even if there is no patrolman on duty, the car is left on the road here so everyone knows not to speed here. It's not really a trap if it's all out in the open, clearly marked, and in plain sight right on the road in front of you. All that being said, I've regularly made small mistakes with my speed right in front of the patrol and they have never stopped me. It's nothing like Kendlton where the government relied on traffic stops to the degree that even 1 mile over the limit would result in a stop. I believe that cars I see stopped are like this poster, failing to see the last 20 speed limit signs and blow into town at 65. The patrol car is an eighth of a mile beyond the light, so speeders must really be in bad shape to get stopped. I do believe the speed limit in town could safely be raised to 40 and perhaps 45 mph, but I'm no safety expert, nor do i have and traffic records. The light is fairly busy with light foot traffic in the day. Also with the east bound traffic, there is quite a bit of turning into the commercial areas.

Buckanear, look for "Buccaneer", as in a pirate. There are warning signs that there is a 35 mph speed limit ahead after several 45 mph signs, plenty of time to slow down. The road narrows to two way traffic and a lot of traffic entering the road. 35 is justified. Just do 35 to 37 and you won't have any problems.
