From the VA/TN border thru Washington County VA

Washington County Virginia Police sit in the median along mile marker 27 which is at the crest of a hill. If you are stopped you will be cited for 78,79, or 80 mph in a 70 mph zone. The officer will stress that you can prepay your fine instead of going to court.

does anyone no what type of radar washington county va uses. the question i have is can their radar units lock in the speed of more than one vehicle at a time. when i ran radar a few years ago our units could only lock in one vehicle at a time. i would love to know the mfg. and model of the radar units they are using. i recently received a speeding ticket for doing 79mph in an 70mph. there is no way i was going that fast so what i think is happening is the officer is locking in the first vehicle and guessing at the speed of the second one. i would like to know how often this happens..

Washington County, Virginia must be broke. Most counties leave speed limit enforcement on the interstate highways to the State Troopers. Not Washington County! They have sheriff's deputies out in force. My wife RARELY speeds, but she was passing a truck on I-81 in Washington County, and got a ticket going 79 in a 70 MPH zone. I'd love to see what sort of budget deficit Washington County, Virginia is running!!!

I am a retired cop and a microwave engineer specializing in antennas. I got a ticket in this area on radar while being passed by another car. (79 in 70) So I went to court. I explained to the judge that California (where I was a cop) does not allow radar on multiple vehicles. I backed this up with my expertise and drawings, but it was for naught. The deputy said he knew I was going too fast, because he could see I was going to fast. That is, a guess. The judge went along with this, even though I had easily produced reasonable doubt. Going by the 100 or so people at traffic court that day, I was not the only one to be stung by this county. What really makes me mad about this is not the cost, it is the danger. I had a friend killed why trying to write a ticket.

Washington County law enforcement officers are paid time and a half to work radar on their days off. They have to write a minimum amount of tickets to justify their overtime pay. Unfortunately, some of them come to rely on this EXTRA pay to pay things like house and vehicle payments. If they do not encounter enough drivers who really are speeding, then they are forced to fudge numbers a little so they can continue working overtime and make their payments.
