Going through the town of Olar

Olar, South CarolinaJun 21, 20104 Comments

This is the biggest rip off speed trap ever! We would travel to and from Atlanta to Charleston. Everytime we would go through the town my husband would say, "this is a speed trap" We never went over the speed limit. Yet we got a ticket. $60.00! We call it the toll through Olar. Believe me! We have never gone that way to Charleston again. I though my husband was kidding when he said we were being pulled over! Just as we left town where the limit goes from 30 to 45. What a joke! Must be their only form of revenue!

I got it on good authority...another town's mayor...that Olar Mayor tells his officer to get out and "bring some money into the town". It has always been "rumored" that if the officer recognizes your car as a local resident, even if speeding, he won't give you a ticket. If you are a "tourist" traveling through...you will get a ticket. They share their one officer with another town...so hopefully this will decrease the ticket writing down considerably...unless troopers get out there!! People think there aren't any crooks/thieves in the country! Ha!

This may be the worst speed trap I've seen in my 40 years of driving. Hidden speed reduction signs within 500' of each other. The officer said he was doing me a favor by issuing a "thoughtless operation" municipal citation for only $250. There are no businesses in Olar, SC to boycott so my advice is to stay well clear.

How funny #2......how are are the speed reduction signs hidden if you saw them? I am a resident of Olar and I am very proud and pleased with our police! Crime has lowered and what we have had, are solved! It is a shame that when people are breaking the law by speeding and they get caught, they want to trash talk the police. I get stopped and it is my fault....I WAS SPEEDING!! Just because we are a small town doesn't mean you can speed through. We hope if you have such lack of concern for our children and elderly crossing the road.......don't come through here! Thank you!

Yes this is a speed trap. Yes they will give you "thoughtless violation" tickets. I assume this keeps the tourist tax close to home. Who can blame them. If you live there you are either living off farm subsidy or you are a government employee. Miserable town, miserable people, no reason to visit. They do not like company, you can tell by the way they maintain their dilapidated corridor. If you can use 301 instead of 321, it's a much better road.
