Highway 270/3/U.S. 412, 8.8 miles East of Slapout, OK
The speed limit is 70 mph. Suddenly a yellow ‘caution’ sign indicates an intersection ahead and ’55 mph.’ A very short distance ahead is Road NS 173. To the South, this road leads to a company with ‘Smithfield’ on the sign and with a substantial number of vehicles in the company parking lot. If the speed limit is lowered along a stretch of highway, a sign advising that the speed limit is reduced ahead is standard. If the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, along with the Harper County, OK Sheriff, along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol believe that the speed limit should be 55 mph, then why is a reduced speed ahead warning sign not already in place? If the aforementioned law enforcement and transportation agencies gave a hoot about Smithfield employees, they would do four things. 1. Put in place a reduced speed ahead sign with ’55 mph’ on it, prior to the speed trap sign currently in place. 2. Immediately past the intersection that leads to Smithfield company, erect a standard ’55 mph’ speed limit sign for a distance, so that Smithfield employees turning East on the highway have a safe amount of time to reach 70 mph. Then a 70 mph sign should go in to the East of the new 55 mph zone. 4. Stop using this intersection as a speed trap. It is impossible to slow down to 55 mph from 70 mph prior to reaching the intersection, because there is no ‘reduced speed ahead’ sign. Also, by not making this intersection safe, law enforcement as well as transportation officials are potentially endangering the lives of Smithfield employees by failing to act just so that they can use this speed trap for fake ‘probable cause’ to pull over vehicles.
