Highway 55 North of Payette River bridge

Horseshoe Bend, IdahoJan 01, 20022 Comments

Highway 55 runs through the middle of this small town between Boise and Cascade. The Highway changes from 4 lanes to 2 in the city limits with a posted speed of 35 mph, THEN in the middle of town there is a school speed limit sign with a blinker that slows all traffic to 25 mph. There is no time shown for this speed and the blinker is always on, day and night, weekdays and weekends. State law has been changed to use school zones only "when children are present" and this is not the case in Horseshoebend.

Comments:
I was stopped here very late one night doing 35 in the 25. Since then the signage has changed. The 25 mph speed limit is not dependent on the school crossing. I think that flashing light is gone. The constant speed is now 25 mph at all times. This is what the officer told me, and he did not give me a ticket. He was empathetic to the conflicting information.

As you are approaching Horseshoe Bend on a 60 mph posted hwy there is a" Reduced Speed Zone Ahead", and after about 1/4 mile the speed limit drops to 45mph. Then, after another 3/10 mile, it drops to 35mph, then drops to 25mph after another 3/10 mile. This is our town, and if you cannot handle approximately a mile of well posted speed reductions, you would be well advised to change your travel plans to US95 - or possibly have DMV reevaluate your qualifications to possess a D/L. There are a lot of kids here and Hwy 55 is the only way to get over the canal that splits our town; so if you don't like our speed limit please stay in Boise and enjoy your city life - WE LIKE OUR TOWN JUST THE WAY IT IS!!!!
