Highway 72 in front of Athens Intermediate School

This is a school zone from 2:30-3:30. The speed drops to 35 mph. There are always two or three police cars actively pulling cars over the entire hour every day.

The comments about the alleged speed trap on hwy 72 in front of the Athens Intermediate School are hilarious. I suppose it is a speed trap for the vision impaired, they could not see the flashing yellow lights and the bold 35 mpr sign, nor could they see the police car parked in the church parking lot in plain view from both directions. Answer this, what type of person does not respect a school zone on a major highway. You really should have some way to check the facts before you label an area as a speed trap, are you legally liable for the slander? I say with no hesitation that the person who wrote this comment was from Lauderale county, they blow through our town with no regard for our speed limits, but then they have a long commute, maybe that gives them the right to do so. I really would be laughing out loud if this didn't make me so angry.

For the comment above claiming this area on Hwy 72 is no speed trap is not true. I live outside the county in another city on the other side of the river. I am a paid firefighter and know what can happen when people don't abide by the rules set to govern speed in a busy time on a certain stretch of highway or city street. Here's the lowdown. When you are not familiar with city, where the schools are, or, where the speed traps are, you can quickly find yourself being tailgated by a set of blue lights. Picture this ... heading east there is a single pole on the right side of the road with an alternating yellow blinking light over a sign that read 35MPH. If you find yourself in the left hand lane and an 18 wheeler in the right hand lane beside you it makes it impossible to see the sign. In my city, our fine leaders stretch a cable high over the road with a yellow blinking light that everyone will notice .. not just the police or the local citizens. The speeding ticket I received yesterday was at 2:40 .. that's 10 mins after the light started blinking and 20 mins before school was released. Being I was pulling a loaded Uhaul trailer, riding beside an 18 wheeler in Athens busy 'school zone' in the middle of the afternoon in bumper to bumper traffic made me, I guess, an easy target. None the less .. my future trips to Huntsville and Madison will not involve me gracing Athens, AL.
