Hwy 11 approaching Niota in both directions
Really abrupt speed limit change with a cop waiting right at the edge. I narrowly avoided a big ticket because I was stuck behind a farmer’s truck. I was annoyed until I saw the speed trap…my thanks to that farmer, he saved me a lot of money.

Niota, Tennessee is a real speed trap. They use a small speed limit sign and only give you 2/10 of a mile to slow down to 35 when the highway limit was 55. This trap is located on U.S. 11 and runs for about 3 miles through Niota, Tennessee. The fine is $100 plus $25 court cost. I was in their court today and there must have been 50 to 60 that were ticketed. No mercy was shown and everyone that had not paid ahead of their court date had to pay up. This is a real moneymaker for their town. I mentioned while in court today that larger speed limit signs would be fairer to help motorist see where the speed zone changed but they were not interested. I am going to try to get the state involved to make them change their signs. Avoid Niota, Tennessee on U.S. 11 if at all possible, it you must travel there, beware of your speed at all times!!!!!
Yes highway 11 in niota is a speed trap. I just received a citation yesterday at that location. I agree that they don't allow enough time to slow down before they nail you with a citation. There many technical and legal reasons that one could fight these citations at this location and I considered doing so. But knowing small town politics there probably wouldnt be a chance of winning. I am a former traffic homicide investigator from the state of florida with14 years of law enforcement experience and I see many flaws in the conduct and execution of their speed trap. I have no issue with paying a ticket that I deserve but I do not like getting a ticket and I do not like seeing the public in general get tickets that are issued in an obvious speedtrap set up for the designed sole purpose of generating money for the city. The city of niota and the niota police department should be ashamed themselves for stooping too low underhanded tactics as such these. Never in the 14 years I was in law enforcement did I ever use these underhanded tactics to issue a citation. What is really sad about it is that about 2 weeks ago I had assisted the very officer that issued the citation. I was the first person person at the scene of a bad accident not too far down the road from the speed trap location. I rendered assistance to the victim of the accident and directed traffic for probably 30 minutes while the officer and fire rescue worked the call. While I would never refuse to help anyone in the public that needed my help I'm not sure that I would be inclined to render any future assistance of any nature to an officer of the niota police department. VERY unprofessional niota no wonder people don't like us.
