Hwy. 226- Burleson Hill through Grassy Creek Area

Spruce Pine, North CarolinaMay 20, 20031 Comments

This is a heavily traveled two-lane road. The NC Highway Patrol is heavy in a 55mph straight for about 1 mile and then as the road approaches Spruce Pine, going down a steep incline, the posted limit is dropped to 35mph and both the city police and the local NC Highway Patrol units, knowing that people will have to apply breaks heavily all the way down (about 1/2 mile)use this are as a "honey hole" to write as many tickets as possible.

Comments:
Definite speed trap. (See comments under the listing for 226 above). The HP hides in the Ford dealership parking lot, among the cars on the lot (hmmm, doesn't the HP buy Ford products??). This is right at the point where the posted speed changes from 35 to 45. The HP will also sit in a small parking lot next to the Valero gas station on the south side of Burleson Hill to catch you coming down the hill and where he can also watch the straight stretch of 226 in front of Pizza Hut. There is supposed to be a "critical shortage" of law enforcement officers in Mitchell County but check out the local restaurants (KB's, steak house, etc.) at lunch time and see if you can count all the cop cars (including the "unmarked cars" in the parking lots. Also, DT's in the morning-regular gathering places.
