Hwy 34 Westbound (becomes Harrison Blvd) into Corvallis

Corvallis, OregonMar 13, 20102 Comments

Hwy 34 coming into Corvallis drops from 55-50mph to 25mph BEFORE coming over the bridge. Police often wait for you to come over the bridge (you won’t see them until the last minute!) waiting in the alley by Umpqua Bank or G&J Auto. It’s easy to get caught off guard but it’s a safety concern too. 3rd and Harrison is one of the worst intersections in OREGON for accidents! Believe me, I owned the store at that corner for 24 years!
This speed trap seems to be listed as Van Buren into Corvallis also but that’s the bridge exiting Corvallis, not entering.

Comments:
Although I've never been caught here, there is still a real scare to the sudden drop in speed. Especially since the speed drops to 25 MPH a good distance before you even get to the bridge. A couple of things to keep in mind are: 1) This is a border between Linn-Benton counties with the actual speed trap on the outskirts of Linn county (not Benton). Another important thing to remember is that nearest Linn county sheriffs office is located in Albany. The nearest state police office is just off of I-5 near Salem. Rarely have I seen someone pulled over anywhere near the intersection where 34 splits off. More than not, if there is a Trooper there, he is usually accompanied by 4 other state cars with 3-4 emergency vehicles because someone was and idiot and ran this light causing a horrific accident. Just go slow around here anyways, because it's a terrible intersection. 2) Coming over the bridge is a different story!!! This for sure is a speed trap!!! Troopers will station themselves in the Umpqua Bank parking lot as previously stated above. They are watching for your speed when you hit the top of the bridge and start entering Corvallis. You should start to slow down about 1/2 way up the bridge so your going 25-30 MPH by the time you cruise on over the peak of the bridge. At that time you can jockey for lane position and scope out the terrain for Troopers. Once again, Happy Trails to all, and don't get caught! J.B. ;-))
