I-295 1/2 mile north of Hopewell/Ft Lee Exit

Hopewell, VirginiaJul 08, 20112 Comments

Marked Sheriff’s vehicles and unmarked muscle car, Dodge Charger (red). They don’t call it the Million Dollar Mile for nothing. Speed Limit is 70. Much Over and you can expect a ticket

Comments:
I-295 is a cash cow for the Hopewell Sheriff's Dept. Traffic enforcement has the sole purpose of ensuring kpublic safety on the hiways. Therefore traffic enforcement should be set up at sites where collisions are frequent or where the are many citizens complaints regarding excessive speed - like in communities where children play in the street. Sadly, and disgustingly, the Hopewell S.O. sets up a speed trap on a "less than 1 mile stretch of I-295 that just happes to run inside the Hopewell City Limits. On this 8/10 mile stretch, there has NEVER been any collisions, nor do children play out there on the interstate. In fact, there is no access to this stretch of hiway from the city proper. The cops have to go outside the city lines jujst to get to this stretch, yet the S.O puts at least 3 and up to five that I have seen on this part of I-295. The Sheriff shouts with pride that his is "enforceing safety" on "his city streets". All the while Hopewell as one of the hightest crime rates in the region. As a career L.Enf Officer, I am embarrassed and ashamed that some 'southern sheriff' conducts enforcement in this manner. SHAME on him, his department and the city. I'd tell travelers to avoid Hopewell, but like I stated, there is no entrance/exist access to the city from this spot, so passer-bys don't know they've been in Hopewell.

I to am former law enforcement and agree with you. This is all about fund raising, if it was helping with accidents then the number of ticket written each year would drop but it is the opposite, they have gone up year after year. BOYCOTT businesses in Hopewell, don't eat, shop, get gas or sleep in Hopewell. Lets see if the businesses that operate there will support their sheriff.
