I-5 between MP 194 and 203

This is a HIGH TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT AREA. Unless you are familiar with the traps in the area, I advise that you use extreme caution. Be especially aware between MP 196 and 198. Around MP 203 there is an emergency vehicle turn around, and it is pretty out in the open. OSP likes to hang out there using both Lidar and X Band. Both north and southbound traffic should be aware of this spot. Further south there is an overpass. Just north (10 yards) of this overpass is a spot that is sometimes frequented by Lane County Sheriff Deputies. Next, northbound and southbound traffic should stay aware south of the overpass. The following is HIGH DANGER ZONE: At around milepost 198 there is an overpass at the crest of a small hill. This is a favorite of Coburg police. They will likely be in the center median right at the base of the overpass and they have a great view of oncoming traffic. They check both north and southbound traffic using K band. Just south of the overpass on the north and southbound sides, are more favorite spots. They are always on the inside of the freeway right before and after the bridge over the McKenzie River. I have observed both OSP and Coburg police in these four spots. Please be aware that they use rear facing radar. X or K bands. Further south toward MP 196 the speed drops down to 55 MPH. Right beyond the sign in the center median is another favorite hangout. They will more likely be checking speed of the southbound traffic. A couple hundred yards later near MP 195.5 is an overpass. I recently sighted an OSP motorcycle trooper using Lidar underneath the overpass on the left side of the highway (only once). The trooper is really hard to see since he’s hidden in the shadows. I’ve seen a cruiser on the right side immediately following this overpass only once.

Comments:
9 years later, and this is still a trap. I received a ticket yesterday evening going southbound. He was hiding in the middle in the dark with no lights on. No doubt that he had been waiting for someone who was going faster than the posted 65. After being pulled over the officer told me I was going 86 which was a complete fabrication since I was locked into 73 on my cruise control. He handed me a fine of 472.00 which is due at the end of the month. In looking for information on violations for Oregon there is no amount listed for that, but since he put that I was going 86 the fees are higher than it would be by nearly 200 dollars if it had even been 85. I am not sure what is going on with this area, but I personally think its ridiculous. I was speeding which i fully admit, but I sure as heck wasnt going the speed he fabricated. Be careful when driving this stretch of highway!
