I-5N at 196th Viaduct
Just as you leave the Port of Everett area, you’ll go downhill on a long, curved slope. Most times, you’re either (1) too busy braking to notice the 60 mph sign – road right, or (2) go with the accelerating traffic flow. Once on level ground, it’s natural to continue with the accelerated speed, esp. since there’s no apparent reason this stretch should be 60 mph – no ramps (until Marysville, 5 miles away), no storefront businesses, and relatively sparse AM traffic. Especially when the weather warms up, an unmarked (usually blue) car will wait for you under the viaduct at 196th, left lane. I’ve also seen motorcycle cops pointing radar on occasion. Most times, I pass by since these cops are already busy with one or two cars. This spot can be unpredictable as it is a feast or famine trap. They’ll disappear for a while, then hit the area hard for a few weeks, and then disappear again.
