I- 95 & Yemassee Hwy

Anywhere in and around Yemassee, SC it is a speed trap. The town’s income depends on speeders. On I-95, at one exit north of I-95 and Yemassee Hwy Yemassee Police stand on the bridge over I-95 with speed gun. At the I-95 and Yemassee Hwy, Police Cars are lined up to pull over vehicles going south on I-95. Also, downtown Yemassee on Hwy 17 and 21 you can be pulled over barely going over the speed limit. For example, they will tell the driver that he/she was clocked at 58 in a 45 mph zone. I was only going 47. The Yemassee Police wrote on the ticket that I was in a 40 mph zone. Make sure you thoroughly review the ticket for accuracy before the officer leaves. The fine was $180. As you exit Yemassee going out of town (toward Hampton or Beaufort) the speed limits increase. As you increase the speed at the edge of the jurisdiction, they get you doing one mile an hour over.

Comments:
I live in SC and would not travel through Yemassee if I didn't have to going to Beaufort. What they do is a disgrace to law enforcement and is just short of hijacking motorists. They recruit Deputies and police officers from surrounding counties to work traffic in Yemassee. Some do it for the pay and new officers do it to get hours. Some people may see them as not tolerating any speeders in their town, but they go way beyond what is respectable. I served as a Sheriff's Deputy in my county and I have relatives who are police officers and they all laugh when someone mentions they got a speeding ticket in Yemassee. And yes I have also been the recipient of tickets in their fine town.
