Interstate 10 near State Route 99

City of Welsh has off duty police officers ( they are working on overtime pay) enforcing the speed limit on the small distance of Interstate 10, that is legally in the city limits of the town of Welsh. The off duty police officers make extra overtime hours writting speeding tickets, for revenue for the City’s coffer to pay for tax reciepts shortfalls. I am a citizen of Welsh and disagree with this practice. The small section of Interstate 10 that is in the city limits, have no bearing on the safety and security of Welsh citizens.

If you don't want a ticket, don't speed. It's not difficult. Traffic Safety is the goal - revenue is the icing. Your safety is important to us.

I am commenting on the 1st comment: Traffic Safety is 'not' the goal ! As a Welsh resident; I, like everyone else in Welsh, knows that purpose of the speed trap is to generate revenue for the town of Welsh. I think the practice is deplorable. The police chief position is an 'elected' position. In the next election; if we have a candidate for chief of police that promises to do away with this regrettable practice ; I will surely vote and campaign for that candidate. Local newspaper reported ( week of 6-6-2011) ; Police Chief and Assistant Police Chief wanted to see the pay ( working off-duty hours) increased to as much as $35.00 per hour. That newspaper article detailed that: program generated $186,459.00 , from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011 ( according to the town clerk).

I am happy that you feel this revenue is "icing on the cake" however you certainly lose a lot of tourist dollars and other income that could come your way. Safety is not the goal. If you are a local you will not be ticketed: if you have out of state plates and obviously won't be back, you will get a ticket with a few extra overage miles added for good measure because they know you will not come to contest it. Not the most honorable way to generate income for the city but if Welsh is not interested in growing business along the I-10 corridor and generating REAL money for the city, well, then it will keep its reputation of being a corrupt, backwards little town. and that's too bad for the really nice people that DO live in Welsh.
