Interstate 44, exit 39A to Fort Sill

Lawton, OklahomaMar 01, 20020 Comments

Highway patrol car sitting in full view in medium of highway. I was driving a rental SUV with NCarolina licencse plate. I was driving no more than 55 MPH, ready to exit to Fort Sill dropping off my son (in full uniform). Two other adult passengers in back seat. I saw the patrol car & immediately looked at my speed and saw that I was going under 60 miles per hour. Somehow I knew he was going to come after me. I thought I’d seen a 40 MPH sign & thought I may have violated THAT speed limit. He came to my window and said he clocked me going 75 miles per hour! I immediately told him that was impossible — I was going slow because I was unfamiliar with what exit I had to make and was going no more than 60, if that…Everyone in the car concurred…he tried to be intimidating. Wrote me up for going 60 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. I argued and he threatened to write it as 75 MPH, as he originally stated. Then he made sure I knew it would be a $100 fine for going FIVE MILES OVER THE SPEED LIMIT! How do I fight an out of state ticket (I live in California)? No question, this was a speed trap! Speed limit goes from 60 to 55 in a short area, but you miss the 55 MPH sign altogether if you’re an out-of-towner!
