Interstate 75

Macon, GeorgiaApr 04, 20092 Comments

I-75 passes through Macon, and the speed limit drops from 70 MPH to 55 MPH. Despite the change in signs, the flow of traffic continues to be considerably above the speed limit. Macon police randomly stop cars that are exceeding the speed limit. The officer admitted that he can’t stop everyone and just picks one car out of the group. The Saturday morning I was stopped there were two cruisers taking turns stopping cars. Be especially careful where I-75 and 475 split, at the north and south ends of Macon.

Comments:
Macon is the only spot on I 75 that drops the speed limit to 55 - definitely a trap for tourists passing through Macon, as well as locals that are not familiar with the highway.

Macon is not the only spot on I-75 that drops the speed limit to 55. It is also 55 going through Atlanta. In Macon I-75 narrows to only two lanes each way, with quite a bit of traffic. Also, I routinely drive I-75 to work and the speed limit is not strictly enforced. They do occassionally sit out but most cars go 70-75 and I rarely see anyone pulled over. They seem to be looking for the major violators which does not constitute a speed-trap. I-16 in Macon is completely different. Speed limit is 65mph and there are always cars pulled over there.
