This is not a classic speed trap, as the speed limit does not change in this area, and the speed is reasonable for the area at 70 MPH. But what is extremely disturbing about the constant patrolling by the Iredell County Sheriff is the excessive searching of vehicles one observes when travelling this highway. Under NC law, the department does not get much of traffic ticket money. The Sheriff makes their money from doing unnecessary and voluntary searches and seizing items in the federal Equitable Sharing program! Most people would think that one has to be convicted of a crime to have their pertinent items seized under Equitable Sharing, WRONG! Although most who do have “eligible” items seized under the federal Equitable Sharing program are for minor drug offenses such as finding a ten year old joint under a seat, opiates without the bottle they came in, etc. only a handful are from major drug runners who the general public expect to have their assets seized. Most who have their items seized without a charge or conviction can not afford the expense or justify the cost of suing the Sheriff to get their items back. The department says they fund certain purchases with “drug dealer money”, but enter “Equitable Sharing” into any search engine to find the truth.
