Interstate 77 near Exit Number 50

Statesville, North CarolinaJan 08, 20085 Comments

Speed limit is below the normal 70mph, without any construction to warrant a 55 mph for a major interstate.

Comments:
Since the speed limit drops unexpectedly from 70 to 55, when they ticket you the speed is 15 MPH over the limit at a minimum which means you now have to have an attorney represent you in court instead of just calling and getting your fine and sending it in through the mail. (This pertains to out-of-state travelers who get a ticket.) But don't worry, as soon as you get home you will have plenty of solicitations from attorneys in the Statesville area offering their services to you. Some even offer to "match or beat" any other attorney's prices! With court costs, you now have over $200 invested In Addition to whatever your fine might be. What a racket!

I received a ticket here on a race Sunday. We had just gotten married the day before. The speed limit changed and I was unaware . I had my cruise set and everything to try and AVOID getting pulled. I had NO IDEA what I was getting pulled for! I had to get a lawyer and it ended up costing around $400 to get out of! Major racket...........so BE CAREFUL!!!! Needless to say, it was quite the memorable wedding weekend!

After 39 years with a spotless driving record I got my first ticket here. I had my cruise control set at 70 mph when the speed limit dropped to 55 mph. Most of the cars and tractor trailers were still passing me when the police officer pulled me over. Two things made my car stick out. It was slower than the passing traffic and it had out of state plates. Now I'm stuck with a $160 ticket - $30 for speeding and $130 for court costs. This is definitely a speed trap for out of staters.

My wife was driving in this area couple of years ago, it was a downhill area on I77, with several vehicles including semi trailers when the speed limit suddenly dropped from 70 to 55. We passed an exit inerchange and I saw a State Trooper on the ramp and sure enough here he came. We went to the next exit as her pulled us over. He approached and said we were going 15 over in a 55mph zone. He said " I'm gonna give you a break ma'm, I'll write the ticket for 10 over, otherwise we can take your license." So my wife said thank you. The amount of the ticket? $140. Nice scam they have in Statesville. Be very careful in that area.

True, I've lived in this county all my life and since I've been driving the mall ramp at 77 exit 50 is 55. And it and I 40 near the cloverleaf have needed re paving for years and they are just now getting to it in 2010-2014 so then the reduction in speed might actually be needed. They must really patrol on race week & holiday weekends (when I stay home) because normally you don't see many.
