Interstate I-75 near Payne’s Prairie

Gainesville, FloridaMar 13, 20063 Comments

Be very careful approaching the south side of the prairie from either direction, but especially from the south. They have you trapped like a rat because there are no exits for 2 miles until you are all the way across the prairie. They enforce heavily around the beginning/end of college semester (University of Florida is just three miles from there) and during holiday seasons like Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Spring Break. They hide in the trees in the median, but also on the right hand side. Best policy is to go five under the speed limit until you are past that area. This is a pretty well-known trap to locals, but even truckers will slow down. Always watch what the truckers are doing. They usually have radar detectors.

Also watch the SB shoulder a few hundred yards before Cafe Risque at the Micanopy exit! There is a clearing where they stage speed traps all hours of the day and night. As soon as I see the Micanopy 1 Mile sign it's time to SLOW DOWN. If you come over the top of the hill running 80+ you are toast, because he has you on radar as soon as you crest the hill.
