Isle of Palms resort island near Charleston SC

The entire island is the speed trap. Be particularly careful on Waterway Dr and the IOP Connector from Mt Pleasant. Tickets are written at less than 5mph over the limit, and the speed enforcement is clearly for revenue generation—not public safety. The island is only 6.5 mi long and 1.5 mi wide and may have 4 or 5 cruisers on duty —the cops are literally tripping over each other. The police also maintain a para-military demeanor on a little resort island that has no real crime—go figure. Beautiful island–nasty police.

Comments:
I must have been extremely fortunate, because I was clocked going 13 miles over the speed limit on the connector (which I've found is very easy to do without realizing it when it's late at night and there's no one around) and I got a warning. The officer I encountered was very polite. I'm still not sure how he got me, because there was literally no one on the road for at least a mile. Needless to say, I learned my lesson and do not speed on the connector or the island anymore. Perhaps they are more polite to those who live there, like myself. I'm not sure. But I do agree that it can be a speed trap since I have seen cops sitting all over the island everyday. If they do in fact write tickets for less the 5 miles over then that is ridiculous.
