Lee/Clyde Street-bet. Rte. 9 (Reservoir) and Newton Street

Brookline, MassachusettsMar 28, 20031 Comments

If you’re coming down Lee Street from Rte. 9 toward the Apple Orchard and Putterham Square area, this is a 4 lane road dotted w/some homes, which I know this is why the speed limit is 35, and it’s so tempting to go 50 w/o even blinking an eye–completely flat and straight road w/no lights until the end when you hit Newton Street. Cops are so so often on a big open side street (on the right) just waiting. I’ve seen them at rush hour when I’m trying to not be late dropping my pre-schooler off at school, as well as on weekend errands, so it’s pretty random, but your best bet is to expect them to be there and never go more than 40. I smile every time I drive by a cop on that road like, "I was expecting you and you’ll never pull my a** over!"

Yes you are so right about this spot been a major speed trap in Brookline; I see that your comment is from 2003 and now in 2011 is still a huge speed trap. The cops are here every week on full force, sometimes there is a motorcycle cop and sometimes one in a car. They hide on the intersection of Clyde St and Lee Street, sometimes they are out of the car with a speed gun pointing at the cars heading west on Lee Street. There is a tree on the house at the intersection that help hide them pretty well. I go even further I guess when the cops are forced to generate more speed tickets I see them on the other side of Lee St to stop motorists heading east. They would hide in Sears Rd and Country Rd, these are very difficult to see you would only noticed them once you went by. The speed limit is 35 on this section of Lee and Clyde. Oh, and the worst section of Lee ST can be on the rotary or intersection with Warren St. near the reservoir. Again, when the cops are probably asked to generate more revenue in speeding tickets I would see them at this intersection, where the speed limit is only 20 miles. There are plenty of signs though, one says 20 miles limit ahead and then two more 20 mile signs, not sure why the speed drops so quickly from 35 to 20 here, I think 30 miles is fine, but is either a dangerous intersection or is a speed trap to generate revenues. I don't see the cops in this spot often, but when I do I see that the cop has stopped 3 to 5 cars at once. I have seen a cop on Sears Rd or another street before which seems to communicate with the cop waiting at this intersation of Warren St and Lee St. 20 miles a very slow speed so it is very easy for cops to know if you are going 35 still. Be careful driving on Lee and Clyde Street.
