Montague Rd

There is usually a cruiser on this road between highway 7 and Waverley Rd. The road is a bit winding and has the subdivision Montague Estates just before a mainly wooded area with hills. Problem is if you assume the 50km/h signs are for the residential areas where it is really hard to knowingly speed with cars turning in and off the road you are mistaken. Even though the wooded area and hills have lines indicating passing zones (like many highways in the region with speeds upwards to 80) it is still 50. If you go over 60 – which you can comfortably do on one of those hills and coast to 70 without pumping breaks you get nailed by the police if they happen to be in the oncoming lane. I know there are way more dangerous roads with higher speed limits in the region (like Caldwell Rd in Cole Harbour) – don’t assume anything there is no ryhme or reason for this road has passing lineson this section but they don’t bump up the speed even a little.

Comments:
People who drive down this hill going more than 60 deserve a ticket. Why would anyone assume the speed limit suddenly increases by 30km/h above what is clearly posted, just because there is a dotted line on the road? Steep hill, sharp corners, hidden driveways, and a residential area with no sidewalks - motorists have been killed on this road, and children have been hit. I only wish they'd put a speed trap in.

What bugs me is not the cops pulling people over here, but the inconsistencies on similar roads throught Nova Scotia and HRM. Too many roads have 80km/h and 70 km/h posted and there is no way to always safely drive on them at that speed. I often get a line of angry drivers behind that attempt to pass and drive aggressive because of what the signs say. I think this Montague road is 50 or maybe 60 - but it looks to drivers the same as some of these other roads with higher limits. A driver shouldn't leave one residential collector street going 70 and have angry motorists on their tail only to turn the corner to the next old road that looks the same and end up stopped by the police for speeding. Montague, Bissett, Ross Rd, Caldwell and others all need the same speed and no old markings that could fool anyone to think otherwise.

Comment #1 is way off base. This is probably one of the most obvious revenue-generators for the city. The four-lane straightaway through the wooded area from Forest Hills/Eastern Shore is posted at 70kmh. At the end of the Woods by Dave's Vegetable Market and the water commission the speed drops to 50 in about a hundred metres. There's the Akerley college for NSCC, but that doesn't warrant a school-zone speed limit nor are there are school zone signs. The police sit there stopping cars that haven't slowed down enough, or are still in the process of slowing down, from that driveway next to the pizza place and Fader Street. Sometimes they sit in the driveway of the water commission. I have seen up to five police cars in there. What an effective use of the city's coffers. They never issue warnings and give the maximum fines available. Watch out at the end of the month, during commuting hours, and on nice days.
